When we experience a traumatic event it lives in our brains and impacts our thoughts, feelings and actions in ways we may not realize. This may be true even after we’ve explored it in therapy. Brainspotting is a treatment modality that utilizes eye position to access the trauma at its deepest levels so that it can be resolved. It will not erase the memory but it will take away its power.
Developed in 2003 by Dr. David Grand, Brainspotting has helped many overcome a variety of mental health related symptoms and performance concerns. This technique is commonly used to identify and heal underlying trauma that contributes to anxiety, depression and other behavioral and emotional issues. The goal of brainspotting is to bypass conscious thinking to access the deeper, subconscious emotional and body-based parts of the brain to facilitate healing. According to Dr. Grand, “where you look affects how you feel.” Through the combined application of neuroscience and mindfulness, brainspotting techniques can help you target challenging emotions and release the attachments to them that keep you stuck.
